“‘…My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness…’” 2 Corinthians 12:9

This month has been a pretty stressful one for me. For the last couple of weeks, I’ve been feeling blah about my businesses. And yesterday, I kind of just had a complete breakdown, and I started questioning myself and what I was doing. To keep it all the way real, I was feeling like this: I’ve been putting in all this work, working all these hours, seven days a week, putting all of this energy into what I feel like is my purpose, and I feel like I’m not getting the results I should quick enough….and I really just want to say FORGET THIS! I mean, I feel like I do all the “right” things: I invest (my time and/or money) in webinars/teleseminars/etc.; I let people know what I have going on without being spammy; I connect with and network with people, but there are moments when I just feel like it’s getting me nowhere, which is super frustrating.

But as I was journaling last night, I thought about something my friend said at church on Sunday, that “when we say and sing songs like, I Give Myself Away, we should really be aware of what we’re saying. ” Because when we say that (and mean it), God’s going to take us through things to get us where we need to be and to the point where it is just about Him. And I realized that I’ve told God that I want to do what He wants me to do and that I want people to see Him through me and get the glory in my businesses and life. What I also realized is that when I worry about if/when the money is coming in (like I think it’s supposed to), if I’m worrying about why these people aren’t noticing me or if I start feeling like this whole thing is stupid because it’s not working how/when I think it should, then I’m not fully letting God show through me, nor am I allowing Him to work in me because while I may continue to do the things I’m supposed to do, I’m not trusting Him 100%, and I’m not content with the situation.

What I know now: It’s not about me! I have to accept the fact that this process I’m going through right now is to get me where I need to be, and in the end, He will get the glory because honestly, there’s nothing I can do to make things how I think they should be. Whatever I have to go through to become the woman I (and He wants) me to be, well, I just have to go through it : )

So in those moments when I feel weak, like I just can’t do this for another second. When I feel like, “What the heck are you doing, girl? This ain’t workin’!” When I feel like throwing my computer out of the window and crawling under the bed, HE is strong. And after I’ve done all I can do and darn near cried my eyeballs out, I can keep moving forward with His strength.

Although we’re getting closer to 2013, this year isn’t over yet! That means you still have some time left to achieve those goals you set back in January. Here are a few quotes to inspire you to keep pushing until you get there:

  1. “We are made to persist. That’s how we find out who we are.” ~ Tobias Wolff
  2. “Do it badly; do it slowly; do it fearfully; do it any way you have to, but do it.” ~ Steve Chandler
  3. “Patience, persistence and perspiration make an unbeatable combination for success.” ~ Napoleon Hill
  4. “A little more persistence, a little more effort, and what seemed hopeless failure may turn to glorious success.” ~Elbert Hubbard
  5. “Success is almost totally dependent upon drive and persistence. The extra energy required to make another effort or try another approach is the secret of winning.” ~ Denis Waitley
  6. “Press on. Nothing in the world can take the place of persistence.” ~Ray Kroc
  7. “Never, never, never give up.” ~ Sir Winston Churchill

You’ve come too far to give up now…keep moving forward!

A few weeks ago, I was a part of the Women Are Gamechangers Bootcamp. Although I wasn’t able to be there in person, my presentation was, and according to Vernetta Freeney, creator of the bootcamp and founder of Women Are Gamechangers, it went really well!

So, I’m excited to share my presentation, Blogging to Build a Brand, with you. I hope you enjoy! :-) And if you have any questions, please feel free to email me.

I’m so excited to announce that in February 2013, one of my dreams will be coming true — I’m launching a magazine, flyy, female & fabulous! The magazine is geared toward current and aspiring women entrepreneurs and will profile various women in small business — from a variety of fields — who encourage and motivate women who either aspire to become entrepreneurs or those interested in growing their businesses. flyy, female & fabulous will also include feature lifestyle articles that cater to other areas of women’s lives like beauty, health and business.

To help get this project off the ground, I’ve created a fundraising campaign via Kickstarter.com! If you don’t know, Kickstarter is a funding platform for creative projects, and it’s an all-or-nothing campaign; if the goal is reached by the time the campaign expires, funders’ credit cards are charged at that time. If, on the other hand, the goal isn’t reached, no one is charged.

So, you may be wondering why you should help me launch flyy, female & fabulous. Well, here are a few reasons:

  • You get something in return! Each donation point listed comes with a fabulous gift or gifts.
  • Over the last two decades, small and new businesses have been responsible for creating two out of every three new jobs (from the National Economic Council).
  • You’ll be helping women achieve their dreams of successful business ownership (and possibly helping them create new jobs!).

To learn more, check out my video, and visit my Kickstarter campaign page. Thanks in advance for your support! :-)

I’ve written about why you should set goals. Now I want to share how to do so. You want to be sure the goals you set are S.M.A.R.T. I’m sure many of you have heard of this method for achieving goals, but if you haven’t, here it is:

Specific — You want to answer the six W questions:
- Who’s involved? (Who do you need to help you achieve the goal?)
- What do you want to achieve?
- When? (establish a time frame — when do you want to see this goal accomplished?)
- Which? (determine requirements and constraints — what do you need to achieve the goal?)
- Why? (particular reasons, the purpose or benefit(s) of achieving goals)

Measurable — Make concrete criteria for gauging progress toward your goal. This helps you stay focused, reach end dates you’ve set and feel a sense of achievement. To see if your goal is measurable, ask yourself the following questions:
- How much?
- How many?
- How will I know when my goal is accomplished?

Attainable — You can reach almost any goal, as long as you plan wisely and create a time frame that lets you complete your objectives. Even if your goal doesn’t seem reachable at first, it will eventually become attainable because you will grow into it.

Realitstic. This means your goal is an objective that you’re willing and able to work towards. Also, keep in mind that you’re the only one who can choose how high your goal should be and determine if it’s realistic. So, how do you know your goal is practical? You’ve previously achieved something similiar, or you ask yourself what conditions you would need to achieve your goal (and you can make it happen).

Timely. As I’ve learned, if your goals don’t have a time frame attached to them, there’s no sense of urgency. And when you don’t have a sense of urgency, there’s no telling when (or if) you’ll achieve your goals. By placing it in a time frame, you put your subconscious mind to work to get started on the goal.

“Your goals are the road maps that guide you and show you what is possible for your life.” - Les Brown

One of my favorite ways to stay motivated and encouraged while striving toward my goals is using quotes! So, here are 10 goal setting quotes that will, hopefully, motivate you to keep moving forward — even when things get rough:

  1. “All who have accomplished great things have had a great aim, have fixed their gaze on a goal which was high, one which sometimes seemed impossible.” - Orison Swett Marden
  2. “A goal is a dream with a deadline.” - Napoleon Hill
  3. “Dreaming is wonderful, goal setting is crucial, but action is supreme. To make something great happen you must get busy and make it happen. Take that action step today that will put you on your path to achievement.” - Greg Wener
  4. “Goals are new, forward moving objectives. They magnetize you towards them.” - Mark Victor Hansen
  5. “Reduce your plan to writing…The moment you complete this, you will have definitely given concrete form to the intangible desire.” - Napoleon Hill
  6. “People with goals succeed because they know where they are going…It’s as simple as that.” - Earl Nightingale
  7. “Not every one of our desires can be immediately gratified. We’ve got to learn to wait patiently for our dreams to come true, especially on the path we’ve chosen.” - Sarah Ban Breathnach
  8. “A goal is created three times. First as a mental picture. Second, when written down to add clarity and dimension. And third, when you take action toward its achievement.” - Gary Ryan Blair
  9. “If you want to reach a goal, you must “see the reaching” in your own mind before you actually arrive at your goal.” - Zig Ziglar
  10. “To be successful you’ve got to have a dream, a vision, a burning passion, a magnificent obsession. This dream, goal, obsession has to become your prime motivator. It takes enthusiasm, commitment, pride, a willingness to work hard, a willingness to go the extra mile, a willingness to do whatever has to be done in order to get the job done.” - Jeffery J. Mayer

By Ali Brown

I know what it’s like to think that the lifestyle you want is out of reach. Just over 12 years ago, I would lie on my bed in my tiny 400-square-foot studio apartment and flip through magazines, wishing I could have the luxurious lifestyles I read about.

Despite that negative, nagging voice in my head that reminded me I could barely afford rent, I’m now living a beautiful life I created for myself from scratch. Instead of moping around an apartment I can barely afford, I now have the means to travel and to inspire others. This year, I spent a few days at Sir Richard Branson’s private island attending the “New Frontiers in Philanthropy” meeting, and I even took an Eat, Pray, Love-inspired solo retreat to Europe.

How’d I do it? By deciding not to settle for being average and thinking BIG.

Changing your mindset can be a challenge, but the rewards are well worth the cost. Here’s how you can get started…

  1. Eliminate negativity. This includes negative self-talk, too. Why would the universe bring you a better life if you don’t appreciate what you already have? Show gratitude for everything in your life now. Those seemingly bad days happen for a reason, so whenever you find yourself thinking, “I can’t do this” or “that’s impossible,” reframe it as the opposite. “I can do that, that is possible…” You owe it to yourself to give yourself the love and support you need to succeed.
  2. Document your dreams. I wanted to manifest a new house, so I listed all of the qualities in my dream home: a 3-car garage, workout room, walk-in closets… (Don’t censor yourself! Anything is possible, even if it seems silly now). I also bought some real estate magazines, cut out pictures of homes I love and created a collage. I’m constantly updating my “dream board,” which is now proudly displayed in my new house!
  3. Surround yourself ONLY with supportive people. I only shared my house dream with friends and family I knew would support my decision. (NOT those prone to phrases like “Are you crazy? Who do you think you are? Ms. Trump?”). Your true friends and family will be happy to share in your dream. If you don’t have anyone else to support you, then it’s time to make new friends — join a local networking group or a mastermind.
  4. Decide, believe, and watch for clues. It’s not enough to make a decision to work towards your dreams. You must also truly believe in them! Don’t worry about HOW your dreams will manifest themselves. Watch for clues, and the HOW will find you, perhaps in the form of a new business partner or a new client. But remember that the dream comes before the HOW.
  5. ACT on opportunities when they appear. Action involves risk. You might have to hire more people to help with a new client. You’ll need time to research that prospective business partner. Or figure out how to hire that amazing new mentor. But it’s up to YOU to take action when the path is revealed. The universe is supporting you, and each step will bring you closer to your dreams.

I got the idea for having “rules to live by” from an awesome book I read some years ago called Beautylicious: The Black Girl’s Guide to the Fabulous Life. In it, the author, Jenyne Raines, talks about her personal philosophy/rules to live by.

I made a list of a few rules I think all women (and everyone, really) need in their lives on my blog, For Colored Gurls, and here are a few of them:

  1. Stop BS’ing, and go after what you want in your life.
  2. Do at least one thing daily to get closer to your goals.
  3. Always find out ways you can improve on you, and strive to be the best version of yourself.
  4. Cherish and spend time with your family, your friends and yourself.
  5. Treat everyone with respect, and be cordial to those you encounter — whoever he or she may be.
  6. Take care of all of you — mind, body and spirit.
  7. Do you and mind your own business. When you’re concerning yourself with your affairs, you won’t have time to worry about anyone else’s.
  8. Remember that happiness is attainable; you create it for yourself.
  9. Always strive to live your best — your most fabulous — life.

What are some rules you live by?

Lamar & Ronnie Tyler

Last night, I had the pleasure of attending the Blogalicious Meetup in Atlanta! The event was hosted by Lamar and Ronnie Tyler, founders of BlackAndMarriedWithKids.com, and I had a fabulous time! I met and connected with some new people, and I learned so much about improving my blog. The panel consisted of Emily Stone, senior web producer for Fox5 Atlanta, Toni Carey & Ashley Hicks of Black Girls Run, Jennifer James of Mom Bloggers Club, Andrea Amir of KLT Labs and Stacie Connerty of GA Social Media Moms/Social Media Chicks.

Some of things I took away are:

  • When you’re trying to become involved with traditional media as a blogger, your expertise is more important than the number of blog readers/subscribers you have.
  • Always respond to emails and comments from your readers.
  • Rely on your audience to help you build your community.
  • Different ways to make money from your blog include affiliate marketing, email marketing, selling ad space, using ad networks and hosting Twitter parties with brands.

A few more photos from the event:
